Elementary students show gains from new programs

Last fall, Schoharie Elementary School launched new curricula including GO Math!, Wonders English language arts, and the READ 180 reading improvement program.

Teachers also continued to engage children in individualized learning and growth through the i-Ready instructional program.

This fall, students started the year enriched with greater skills and knowledge thanks to those efforts.

One year ago, during fall 2016, 31 percent of Schoharie Elementary students were achieving at or above benchmarks (achievement goals) set for math. By the end of last school year, and learning through GO Math!, that number of students grew to 67.5 percent.

In English language arts, using the Wonders curriculum, the percentage of elementary students reaching or exceeding benchmarks rose from 61 percent to 65 percent.

When one looks at results of the I-Ready individualized learning and assessment program, the growth in the number of students performing at or above their grade level is even more dramatic.

During fall 2016, 24 percent of students were working at grade level in English language arts; by the end of the year, 62 percent were literally making their grade, or above. In math, the percentage of students working at grade level or above rose from 18 percent to 68 percent.

The GO Math!, Wonders and i-Ready are engaging, up-to-date programs that feature interactive and creative ways for teachers to teach and children to learn.

Going far beyond chalk and talk and test, the programs include games, group activities, tailored instruction, videos, graphics, workbooks, computer-based lessons and online tools.

The GO Math!, Wonders and i-Ready programs are research-based and designed to keep pace with today’s teaching and learning environments. At Schoharie Elementary and beyond, they have proven to be both effective and enjoyable.
