Wright named director of curriculum & pupil personnel services

head and shoulders photo of Matthew WrightMatthew L. Wright of Delanson has joined the SCS staff as director of curriculum and pupil personnel services, a position previously held on an interim basis by Michele Weaver.

Among Wright’s goals in his new position are to “ensure that every student has the opportunity to be successful and to be academically and socially prepared for the larger world.”

He also looks forward working with fellow educators and partnering with the community to foster students’ independence and provide work-based learning experiences.

“Mr. Wright is a great addition to our administrative team,” Schoharie Superintendent Dave Blanchard said. “His experience and knowledge of special education regulations will help move the district forward.

“He has proven to be a great advocate for children with special needs, and we are very lucky to have attracted someone of Mr. Wright’s caliber to fill this very important position.”

Wright comes to Schoharie from the Ballston Spa School District, where he served as director of special education and before that as supervisor for secondary special education.

Wright’s educational experience also includes positions as a summer school principal and certified school social worker at Guilderland Central School District and program coordinator for instruction at Wildwood Programs.

A U.S. Army veteran, Wright served active duty as a combat medic in Korea and at Fort Carson, CO and Fort Drum, Watertown, NY. He also served as an operations officer in the New York Army National Guard based in Latham.

Wright holds an Advanced Certificate in School Building and District Leadership from SUNY Stony Brook, a Master of Social Work from SUNY Albany and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from SUNY Potsdam.

He has been active in the community as an American Youth Soccer Organization coach and enjoys reading, outdoor activities and spending time with his wife, Betsy, who is a teacher, and their two daughters.
