March 14, 2018 letter from Dr. Calacone about school safety

March 14, 2018

Dear Jr./Sr. High School families:

In light of recent events in the local and national news, I wanted to give you an update on school safety in our school. Please be assured that safety is our utmost priority and chief concern on a daily basis. And while not all safety measures are public knowledge, here are some of the steps we have been taking (or will be taking) to ensure that our students are safe and secure throughout the school day:

Partnering with local, county, and state police agencies:

-These partnerships include regular visits to our offices, walkthroughs in our hallways, and standing invitations to be a part of our school community.
Conducting all safety drills as required by NYS Education Law
-For the last three years, all lockdown drills have been conducted with law enforcement present.

Implementation of Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program:

-Setting school wide expectations for student behavior and a more positive school climate.
Utilizing school staff- school counselors and school psychologist
-Meeting with students in order to address their unique needs during the school day.

Utilizing school staff- facilities:

-Regularly inspecting our school grounds (especially doors and windows).
March 21st Staff Development Day (afternoon session)
-Lockdown/Active Shooter training with Schoharie County Sheriff’s Department.

Monthly district safety committee meetings:

-Working collaboratively with the elementary school to keep our campus safe.

In the coming weeks, we will be ready to implement our new visitor management system. This system will require all visitors to our school building to present valid, state-issued identification if they intend to move beyond the main office. I thank you in advance for your cooperation and support of this initiative.

We continue to encourage you, our community, to report any and all suspicious activity to a school administrator as soon as possible. This request is consistent with the Sheriff’s advice of, “See something, Say something.”

Thank you for the privilege of working with your children each day. Together, we will provide a safe and secure learning environment where students can receive a world class education.

With best regards,

Dr. Kevin Calacone
Principal
