Spellers go 14 rounds in tough competition

They went 14 rounds, and it came down to words for mounted infantry and jawbone for a schoolwide spelling bee win for Sophia Watson.

The 5th grader clinched first place by correctly spelling dragoon and mandible at the Jan. 3 event. Sophia, who received a "Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary" from the Schoharie EPTSO for her win, will represent the district at the 2018 Regional Spelling Bee at Proctors on Feb. 13.

Students in grades 4 through 8 participated in the annual Schoharie Central School District Spelling Bee, where 7th grader Josh Mitchell finished in second place and 6th grader Sophia Styles finished third.

This year's contest proved quite challenging, with students missing words like grandiose and Hispaniola, but correctly spelling Methusaleh and exasperation.

Congrats to all of the Schoharie Spelling Bee participants:

4th grade: Grace Reinhart, Josh Ringuette, Kyleigh Rockwell, Justin Schultz
5th grade: Jimmy Alexander, Dae'ree Brice, Lily Tessarzik, Sophia Watson
6th grade: Alexis Davis, Teyah Mason, Yari Rivera, Sophia Styles
7th grade: Max Ballard, Eliza Cater, Josh Mitchell, Gavin Thomas
8th grade: Justice Amos, Brenna Hewitt, Mary Palmieri

Spelling Bee judges included Elementary Principal Andrea Polikoski, 4th Grade Teacher Karen Yager and ETPSO member Heidi Florussen. Schoharie High School Librarian Marian Burghart was the pronouncer.

Best of l-u-c-k to Sophia Watson at the regionals.
