Schoharie senior awarded welding scholarship

Tanner Kent and Dave McQuaid

Sparked by a national scholarship and essential gear award, Tanner Kent's future welding education and career look brighter than ever.

The Schoharie High School senior and welding & metal fabrication student at the Capital Region BOCES Career & Technical School's Center for Advanced Technology at Mohonasen, was recently honored with a $500 American Welding Society scholarship at the center by American Welding Society President Dave McQuaid.

Kent was also presented with a "welder's essential gear bag" compliments of Haun Welding Supply and Lincoln Tech by American Welding Society member Erich Haun, who is manager of Haun Welding Supply & Haun Specialty Gases located in Latham, N.Y.

Nominated for the award by Career & Technical School officials, Kent plans to attend a technical school year next year and join a local union.

"Next year, I plan on going to a technical school and building on the skills I have already developed here at Capital Region BOCES. I hope to join a union hall and maybe further expand on my skills in a specialized area," he said.

McQuaid, head of the 73,000-member Florida-based professional organization, is a nearly 50-year welding industry veteran who started as a civil engineer and developed into a structural welding expert.
