HOBY Conference inspires Bortell to run for district president

When then-Schoharie High School sophomore Rebecca Bortell attended the Hugh O’Brian Youth (HOBY) Leadership Conference last June at SUNY Oneonta, she not only enjoyed the sessions she attended; she was inspired to do more.

Now, Bortell is serving as HOBY District 2 president, an office she decided to run for following the conference.

At the HOBY conference in June, Bortell and classmate Jacob Fagnani took part in hands-on leadership activities and networked with students from throughout the Capital Region. They returned to Schoharie with skills to lead others and make a positive impact on their community.

Bortell is committed to community service and has been logging volunteer hours, including service with the NENY Regional Food Bank. When her school advisor suggested she consider running for HOBY president, Bortell thought about it, wanted the challenge and to stay connected with HOBY - so she did. And she won.

What's next? Bortell has her eye on serving as a HOBY conference J-staff volunteer.

In her new position as HOBY District 2 president and in view of her ongoing volunteerism, Bortell embodies the HOBY goal of "empowering high school sophomores to recognize their leadership talents and apply them to become effective, ethical leaders in their home, school, and community."
