Schoharie Valley FFA teams shine at State Fair

The Schoharie Valley FFA Chapter brought home several awards in dairy, livestock and vegetable crop judging from the 2016 New York State Fair held recently in Syracuse.

The Junior Dairy Judging Team took top honors. Hannah Cater earned a 3rd individual award, Katie Brisley a 4th individual, Joyce Kennedy a 5th individual and Dominick Snyder a 7th individual.

The Senior Livestock Team earned 2nd place honors in the State FFA Livestock Judging Career Development Event and qualified for competition at the Eastern States Exposition in Massachusetts. Members Theresa Cater, Kyle Cornwell, Jacob Fagnani and Marilyn Hanley will represent Schoharie Valley in the contest.

The event gives agricultural education students an opportunity to make accurate observations of livestock including beef, sheep, swine and goats, determine desirable traits in animals, make logical decisions based on their observations and discuss and defend those decisions. Participants place classes of breeding and market beef, sheep and swine and then give oral reasons to the judges as to why they placed each class as they did.

The Veg Crop Team of Theresa Cater, Terry Lansing, Marilyn Hanley and Mikenzie Stahl finish 3rd in the State Veg Crop Career Development Event and Lansing was 6th individual. Students identified categories of flowers, ornamentals, fruits/nuts and vegetables, judge various vegetables and flowers in a comparable placing format and take a test on plant production and preparation.

FFA is a national organization of more than 625,000 members preparing for leadership and careers in the science, business and technology of agriculture. An integral part of the agricultural education program in public schools, FFA has as its mission "to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education."
