Schoharie Valley FFA team wins top awards at states

Farm Business Management FFA team

Each member of the Schoharie Valley FFA Chapter's Farm Management Team, which includes Courtney Koons, Marilyn Hanley, Morgan Hoffmann and Daphnie Sigler, placed in the top 10 at last week's New York State FFA Convention in Morrisville.

Also at the event, Marilyn Hanley finished 3rd in the state in the Extemporaneous Speaking and secured a 2nd place overall finish in the FFA Discussion Meet Career Development Event.

Chapter members Alexis Borst, Alexis Danthine, Marilyn Hanley and Daphnie Sigler received the Empire Degree, the state FFA's highest honor.

Sydney Stanley and Gabrielle Danthine received national recognition for their American Degrees, to be awarded in October at the National FFA Convention in Indiana. Schoharie Valley FFA members will compete in the Career Development Event at the convention.

"The FFA Farm and Agribusiness Management Career Development Event helps students learn business skills and apply economic principles to agricultural businesses," said Dave Marbot, FFA advisor and agriculture teacher. "It provides competition that fosters information assimilation, critical thinking and problem-solving skills necessary for successful business management."

Marbot noted that skills learned through the event can be used to successfully manage a farm or agribusiness, pursue agricultural business careers and manage personal finances.

Schoharie Valley FFA members and their advisor are looking forward to their national trip and competition in Indianapolis next fall.
